ABOUT

“Dr. Karl,” earned his Doctor of Optometry degree in 2006 from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA.  Upon graduating, he felt a calling to serve the people that made his identity…the fine people of the greater Baltimore area and its surrounding communities.

Greater Baltimore is a region Dr. Malicdem knows well. He graduated from Towson University with a B.S. in Biology in 1999.  He completed a minor in Spanish at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

While in Towson University, he worked part time at Dr. Goldstein and Associates of Owings Mills Mall.  It was there, that he first discovered that he had a growing passion for the field of optometry.   This passion then eventually led to a job of being the head ophthalmic technician at the Mercy Hospital clinic of the Katzen Eye Group.

Dr. Malicdem enjoyed internships at Upham’s Corner and the Dorchester House Community Health Centers in Boston, MA, then back home at the Veterans Administration and the Wilmer Eye Clinic / Johns Hopkins Hospitals in Baltimore, MD.  He continues to keep a pulse on the dynamic profession of optometry by taking continuing education courses associated w/ NSU College of Optometry in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Vision Expo East in New York City.

He has practiced optometry with Strickland Eye Care, Delgado Eye Care, Peepers Eye Care, Barenburg Eye Associates, Baltimore Eye Physicians and the Katzen Eye Group.  He had a private practice, All Eyes On You EyeCare, LLC, a collaboration w/ For Eyes/Grand Vision for a brief time in Nottingham, MD.

His compassion goes beyond the exam room. Dr. Malicdem currently has served as a liaison to the American Optometric Student Association and the National Optometric Student Association. He also volunteers with VOSH – Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity. With grants from the Lion’s Club International, Dr. Malicdem organized mission trips to Baharona, Dominican Republic and Chetumal, Mexico.  He has also supported the Maryland Optometric Association in the advancement of the profession as they won a long legislative battle to increase their scope of practice by year 2020.

Dr. Malicdem is married to the love of his life and they have two beautiful and talented daughters. An avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Malicdem has coached his daughters in CYO soccer at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Joseph School – Fullerton.  He is the current Girls Basketball Head Coach at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Middle School.   He roots proudly for the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens.   He has a sports memorabilia collection that includes artifacts and autographs from Babe Ruth to Cal and Eddie to Mike Trout.   He also has a critically acclaimed sneaker collection that features every sneaker that Michael Jordan wore during his career.
