Levin Eyecare Offers New, Innovative Cataract Laser Treatment as Practice Expands

Jan 25, 2019

The local eye care specialists at Levin Eyecare are on the cutting-edge of surgical cataract procedures, now offering the latest in cataract treatment through the use of laser and multifocal lens technology. Laser cataract surgery provides patients with an FDA-approved, blade-free procedure that provides increased precision with better visual outcomes, faster healing time, less postoperative discomfort and a decreased risk of complications.

The first femtosecond laser approved by the FDA for laser cataract surgery, the LenSx® laser is an innovative technology that operates with unmatched precision. The LenSx® laser adds computer control to keys steps of the cataract surgical procedure. Its unique software control system analyzes high-resolution OCT images of the eye, which helps the surgeon design a customized procedure. The software then performs this customized procedure on command from the surgeon. To further enhance accuracy, a patient interface connects the patient’s eye to an image-guided surgical unit. This ensures that both the LenSx® laser and the surgeon commanding it has precise, real-time images at all times during the laser procedure.

Laser incisions also increase the success of astigmatism correction through a procedure known as astigmatic keratotomy, which is necessary to ensure patients will not be required to wear glasses after the surgery is complete. The LenSx® Laser also allows surgeons to make precise circular incisions that allow the latest in premium lenses to be fitted for cataract surgery patients. These lenses, known as presbyopia-correcting multifocal IOLs and accommodating IOLs, provide the best visual outcomes for patients.

According to Dr. Ismail Shalaby, M.d & Ph.D., “Laser cataract surgery allows for more consistent outcomes and ensures that a perfectly round incision will be made so that lenses can be placed in the optimal location. While more expensive than traditional approaches, laser surgery and multifocal lenses should be recommended to every patient based on the accuracy and favorable outcomes it produces.”

These innovative new technologies will be available to patients serviced at all of Levin’s practices, including their newest practice locations in Eldersburg, Lutherville-Timonium, Pikesville and Overlea. These practices were acquired through the purchase of Total Vision by Levin Eyecare. The acquisition, which occurred in the summer of 2018, will allow for Levin to expand their care capabilities and create partnerships with the experienced ophthalmologists and optometrists of the former Total Vision.

Concerning the acquisition, Levin Eyecare’s CEO, Dr. Richard Levin, said, “Levin Eyecare has experienced tremendous growth in the last several months, and we are excited to be able to expand into new regions and serve a larger, more diverse population with the latest in ophthalmological technologies and procedures. ”

These new locations complement the seven other locations Levin Eyecare currently offers, which are located throughout the major hubs of Baltimore County, Harford County and Baltimore City. Their in-house ophthalmologists and optometrists share over 100 years of diagnostic, optical and surgical experience, and they have earned numerous awards and commendations in the fields of ophthalmology, genetic research, cataract evaluations, lens implants, teaching, community service and more.
